and Seal pup taught me
Funny thing is,
I didn’t actually plan to paint these cheeky little blighters but they kind of begged to be painted. They just… sort of turned up in my life, one by one and each one taught me something special.
You see I was in a rut, what some call an Artist block. Fed up with making art that didn't fill my soul. I was painting but mainly stuff that I created for others, I lost my spark. Anyway there I am off on a trip to my all time favourite place.
My happy place has always been the wilds of Scotland, walking the majestic mountains in total freedom. Wandering stunning beaches with my dogs, exploring rock pools, generally behaving like a kid again. It’s where the noise in my head quiets down and I have time to notice the little things. It was there that I began spotting these characters one by one.
You have to be real quiet to see them and the dogs are trained to stay real close and calm so we don't disturb the wildlife but one day I saw my first otter, splashing about in pure joy, like the whole world was a game. I was so excited. As I watched I realised it's pure uninhibited pleasure was a message to me to remember how good it feels to just let go and laugh.
The next character who showed up was a badger, the first I had seen for many years. It seemed so steady and unhurried, It stopped and looked at me with no fear before gliding off into the darkening wild woods, showing me what quiet courage looks like.
Much later I came across my first ever seal pup, stretched out on the rocks without a care. I stood and watched from a distance how it waited calmly, I sat and waited too and came to see the seal's serenity was teaching me that there is a beauty to just stopping and slowing down.
I knew then I wanted to capture the spirit of the characters I had seen.
And lastly the one I have seen the most in my life, the fox cub, eyes wide, as he crossed my path one misty morning. Stopping to investigate the hedgerow with curiosity before disappearing with a pounce through the thicket ahead as if to reminded me to stay curious about what is ahead.
When I finally picked up a paintbrush, it wasn’t about making art for the sake of it but to pass on the message these animals had taught me. I knew then I wanted to capture the spirit of these characters, to be confident to live with joy, with courage, with curiosity and in pure serenity.

About Kerensa Mckie
Kerensa Mckie was born in London and currently lives in West
Yorkshire, England and specialises in artwork inspired by nature and the world she sees about her.
Current exhibitions include works on display at the Physio and Therapies, Todmorden Clinic.
Recent awards include the LightSpaceTime and
11th All Women Exhibition. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, making the long list for the 2025 Visual Artist Association Artist of the Year and eagerly awaits the final in September.
When not painting Kerensa can be found in the wilderness soaking up inspiration for her art and filling her soul.
